So we pull up to our semi secret favorite left and it’s pretty good. It’s not as hollow as it could be, but that doesn’t mean kegs aren’t detonating regularly. As our feet hit the water, some skinny long haired guy throws a full round house cutback on a critically steep wave…Sean says “hey man, that’s Rob Machado!” I was skeptic at first, but sure enough, we paddle out and there’s Rob smiling in the lineup. There were quite a few of us out, all veterans of this dangerous reef…and while we thought we were killing it, Rob was 50 feet deeper, air dropping into the flats, water sucking out six inches deep and he would just throw himself under the lip and make an impossibly long barrel. It was pretty humbling. The rest of us were taking off on the ‘normal’ takeoff spot and getting “head dips” to quote one of Rob’s photographers. Thanks buddy…. all I know is Rob Machado is a pretty lucky guy, he got to surf with us!
